Hi Friends,

What exactly makes the difference between Addons and Plugins of a browser ? How they are helpful ? Do they require extra memory while start up of the browser ??

add-ons / extensions and plug-ins are utilities added to (main) software to serve a purpose .

actually both add-on and plug-in refer to a small program which works along with main program .

we can say like this :

add-on is an utility which is exclusively written to add into another software for a specific purpose .
add on does not run alone as a stand alone utility . usually we see add-ons for internet browsers .

eg. noscript , adblock plus , google toolbar ... are added into firefox browser for specific needs .

plug-in is a piece of code which is added from one type of software into another type of software .
plug-in code becomes active on demand i.e. when there is a need to serve the required purpose .

eg. internet browsers show pdf files through acrobat plug-in . Acrobat (reader) is another software .
