To select text in Word most of the people keep cursor holding down left mouse button drag on the sentence.
Other methods:

1. To select a word: double click on it.
2. To select a sentence: Keep mouse pointer any where on the sentence and Ctrl+Click
3. To select a paragraph Triple click on it.

See this image have you tried to select text like this?

To select text like above place cursor at a point, hold down Alt button press left mouse button drag down & right or left / top as required. Now you can give a colour / copy it or bold / italics what ever you want.
